Job Description

LODI UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASS TITLE: SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY ASSISTANT BASIC FUNCTION: Under the direction of a certificated Language, Speech and Hearing Specialist, assist in providing speech therapy services to special education students in accordance with Individualized Education Program (IEP); maintain records and documentation on students; perform related duties as required. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: E=Essential Duty Individual positions may not perform all of the duties listed nor do these examples include all responsibilities of positions in this class. Provide speech therapy services as directed by a district certificated Language, Speech and Hearing Specialist in accordance with district policies and procedures. E Conduct speech-language screenings using specified protocols developed by a certificated Language, Speech and Hearing Specialist. E Assist Language, Speech and Hearing Specialist with student assessment; maintain student confidentiality. E Gather data in the educational environment in such areas as oral motor skills, intelligibility, language function and usage. E Prepare therapy materials and/or equipment for use in classroom and therapy activities. E Adapt or modify instructional materials and/or equipment as determined by student needs and abilities for teacher use in classroom. E Document student progress; assist with informal documentation. E Schedule activities, prepare charts, records, graphs or other performance data; perform related clerical support tasks. E Perform checks and maintenance on augmentative communication devices and equipment. E Assist Language, Speech and Hearing Specialist in preparation of student information for presentation to parents, staff, etc. E Participate and collaborate as a member of an educational team in developing and providing services for individual students to improve their academic performance. E Participate in research projects, in-service training, public relations programs and meetings as assigned. Travel from school to school. Perform related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF: Human anatomy and physiology related to speech and language function Correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation Effective record-keeping practices and procedures Phonetics Normal speech, language and hearing development Language disorders and rehabilitation Articulation disorders and rehabilitation Acquired disorders and procedures Hearing disorders and aural rehabilitation Clinical methods and procedures ABILITY TO: Communicate effectively and collaboratively with parents, family members, district personnel and Language, Speech and Hearing Specialist Write clearly, employing appropriate grammar and usage Deal effectively with attitudes and behaviors of students Manage and use time effectively Act professionally at all times Select, prepare and present materials effectively Maintain student performance documentation Assist Language, Speech and Hearing Specialist Manage behavior and treatment program Provide effective implementation of treatment objectives Perform clerical duties and operate standard office equipment including computer, copier, fax machine Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school supplemented by college-level coursework resulting in a valid California Speech-Language Pathology Assistant License; valid California Driver License.
